Electronic Waste Disposal Ban to Take Effect January 1:
Beginning January 1, 2010, it will be illegal in Oregon to dispose of computers, monitors and televisions in the garbage or at garbage disposal sites.
These items will instead need to be reused or recycled.
The ban on disposal of certain electronics is part of 2007 legislation (HB 2626) that also created Oregon E-Cycles, a free statewide recycling program for these items.
A list of E-Cycles collection sites is available at oregoncycles, or by calling 1-888-532-9253 (1-888-5-ECYCLE).
The disposal ban does not include cell phones or computer peripherals such as keyboards, mice, speakers, printers and scanners, though some E-Cycles collection sites will also accept those items for recycling.
Penalties for anyone knowingly violating the disposal ban on computers, monitors, and TVs may be as high as $500 for each item disposed of improperly.
