What is a Cadet?
The Independence Police Department Cadet program is a youth oriented program affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America.
The primary purpose is to provide young men and women with experience to determine if they would like to pursue a career in law enforcement.
The program provides the department with additional human resources and opens an avenue of understanding between police and the community's youth. |
What do we do?
The Police Cadets assist regular officers by performing non-hazardous duties, assisting the officers with their reports, public fingerprinting, and other community related projects like the 4th of July parking/crowd assistance, and anti-crime campaigns.
The Police Cadets are non-compensated, but are completely insured while in training and while on duty.
New members will be furnished with their own uniforms and equipment upon acceptance into the program. |

Who are we seeking?
To qualify for the position of Police Cadet, you must have at least a "C" average in high school or college, be between 16 and 20 years of age, and be of good moral character without any serious arrests or criminal record.
The next step in the selection process involves passing a written test and taking an oral interview.
Police Cadets must be dedicated members of the community with exemplary attitudes. They need to have strong moral character, a good reputation, and be a positive role model to their peer group.
Police Cadets are expected to refrain from activities that would be considered improper or illegal.

What training will I receive?
After acceptance into the program, initial training for Cadets consists of topics headed by qualified training instructors/advisors.
Training such as firearm safety, community relations, police procedures, defensive tactics, and physical training are all part of our curriculum.

How and where do I join?
If, after reading the information, you decide you want to become an Independence Police Cadet, and you feel that you meet the qualifications, please contact the Independence Police Business Office at Independence City Hall. You may print out an application form here, fill it in, and mail or carry it to the IPD.
You need to live in Polk County in order to become involved with the Cadets.
