The Independence Police Department will be conducting a crosswalk compliance check this Friday, September 8th from the hours of 1200pm through 4pm. The police department will be using an employee as a decoy. The decoy will be dressed in bright clothing, and will only be crossing at marked crosswalks within the city limits. Since this will be the first week that school is back in session, the emphasis will be near marked school zones.
These missions are funded from a grant that was awarded to the department from the bicycle transportation alliance and the Willamette pedestrian coalition.
The September 8th Mission will be the last in a series of 4 crosswalk compliance missions that will be conducted through September of 2006. Community notification will be made before each mission with the date, and times. There have been changes in the crosswalk laws enacted in SB 591, which took effect this year.
