What is a Reserve Police Officer?
The Independence Police Department Reserve Officer program is designed to augment the full-time officers of the Police Department as well as provide participating individuals the opportunity to work in law enforcement. Independence Reserve Offices can advance to a position where they wear uniforms, operate police vehicles, and work directly under full time officers. Police Reserves are expected to assist with community policing projects, as well as special events like the 4th of July celebration. |
What do Reserve Officers do?
Independence Police Reserves assist regular officers by assisting with police functions.
Additional duties performed by reserves include writing detailed police reports, public fingerprinting, and other community-related projects like the 4th of July parking/crowd assistance, and anti-crime campaigns. Police Reserves are non-compensated. The experience obtained by reserves often assists them in obtaining full time employment. New members will be furnished with their own uniforms and equipment upon acceptance into the program. |

Who are we seeking?
To qualify for the position of Reserve Police Officer, be at least 21 years old, have a high school diploma and be of good moral character without any serious arrests or criminal record. Applicant testing includes a writing test, spelling test, typing test, and a physical agility test. Those applicants that are in the top of this testing are invited back for an oral interview, those top applicants meet with the Chief of Police who makes the final appointments. Reserve Police Officers must be dedicated members of the community and be of good moral character, not having any serious concerns in their past. |
What training will I receive?
After being hired as a Reserve Officer, there is a required reserve academy that all reserves must complete. Training such as firearm safety, community relations, police procedures, defensive tactics, and physical training are all part of the reserve academy. |

How and where do I join?
